COVID-19, a disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, made it mandatory to cover the mouth and nose. Wearing masks has become commonplace. However, it is worth knowing that, depending on the material from which they are made, the applied FFP filter system, they protect to a different extent.
The main task of the masks is to reduce the transmission of bacteria and viruses that spread through droplets. The protective effect of disposable masks is to create a protective barrier for the sensitive parts of the face, i.e. the mouth and nose. On the other hand, more effective are those which additionally have filtering properties and thus clean the inhaled and exhaled air.
Filtering Face Piece
The FFP system defines the class of the filter used in the mask, which determines the limit of internal leakage, i.e. the degree of mask leakage and the filtration of particles up to 0.6 μm. Products in this category must meet the stringent European standards EN-149. Obtaining the EU-Type Examination Certificate means that the product has undergone appropriate technical tests by accredited institutions with the status of a notified body.
The correct FFP2 mask name is a half mask with a filter. It adheres perfectly to the face and the inhaled and exhaled air passes through the place on the mask with a filter, retaining as much as 94% of particles – viruses, bacteria and harmful dust that could get into the respiratory tract.
FFP2 masks are very easy to disinfect – just leave them in a safe place for 72 hours. This is, of course, due to the fact that the coronavirus persists on such surfaces for about 3 days.
It is enough to put the mask in a safe place for 72 hours. The half masks can be used for one shift, i.e. 8 hours. During this time, it fulfills its protective properties.
Before using a mask with a filter, verify that none of the elements is damaged. Broken and out of date cannot be used. In order for the mask to fulfill its task, it must first of all be properly put on the face part. It must fit snugly against your face, covering the mouth and nose to avoid leaks. After putting the elastic on the head, a nose clip should be formed to improve tightness.
